About
the images
The 2003 conflict in Iraq had unprecedented media access, including embedded journalists traveling with the military in Iraq. On a daily basis, images were transmitted to the living rooms of people around the world.
As viewers, we are now used to "soundbite" news coverage and digest information in very short periods of time. From this coverage we formed opinions about the war in Iraq - the right and wrongs of the war and the actual events as they unfolded on the ground.
The news networks had to compete with entertainment programming for the eyes and ears of television viewers. At times the boundaries of entertainment and documentary seemed blurred. This is reflected in several images of the Academy Awards ceremony that year.
The original Polaroid photographs were acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston in 2006. Eighty five images are arranged as a mosaic in a single panel. The acquisition is a gift by Paul Smead in honor of the casualties of the Iraq War.
In recognition of journalists and photographers who have lost their lives reporting on conflict around the world, the photographer donated all money received for these photographs to the Daniel Pearl Foundation .
